Like Pokémon Silver, which is essentially the same story with minor gameplay variations, Pokémon Gold casts players in the familiar role of a young Pokémon Trainer who is out to collect as many different kinds of Pokémon as possible. As in previous games, gameplay consists mostly of exploration (completing various quests in the process) and Pokémon battles, which employ a unique battle-system that's like a complex twist on rock-paper-scissors.
But despite the similarities, it's quite apparent that Pokémon Gold is a whole new ball game from the start. The game is played out in real time, with the current time and day-of-the-week (recorded by an internal clock) having a direct impact on gameplay elements, such as what Pokémon you will find in the wild, and when certain events occur and characters appear.
While there are simply too many new and improved features in Pokémon Gold to list here, among the highlights are 100 new Pokémon (including two new types), new evolution processes (including breeding) and a more streamlined game interface with better-organized menus and button shortcuts.
Although it's easier to progress in Pokémon Gold than the previous games, the sheer amount of fun and game time involved is daunting. You would be really hard-pressed to find a better value game than this. --Joe Hon

The history of video games is littered with translations of films--most of them bad. Harry Potter and the Philosopher's Stone, while most certainly created around the feature film's visualisation of the Harry Potter story, is actually very good, despite being too easy for most experienced gamers. It's a fun, colourful experience even for the few of us left on this planet who have neither read the books nor watched the movie.
Electronic Arts thankfully placed a lot of emphasis on production value for this release instead of taking the cheap cash-in option. Aside from the occasional pop-up problem that makes walls vanish quite un-magically, the graphics are beautiful and fun. Chocolate frogs (an appropriate health power-up) and other elements and characters from the book and film are wonderfully animated. The sound effects and, particularly, the voice acting are top drawer, which helps draw the player into the Potter experience. Also, the gameplay is nicely varied throughout. Players go from learning a new spell in class, to retrieving fire seeds for Hagrid, to magic fights against the Slytherin bully Draco Malfoy, to riding the broom--which is especially fun. There's even a Quidditch level early on, but there's little to do and it's over very quickly.
On the downside, the game suffers from some really odd control. Like a lot of adventure games, jumping is really important since many levels require you to clear obstacles or reach out-of-the-way items. But, unlike nearly every other game in the genre, there's no jump button. Instead, players automatically jump from the edge of a platform from either a full stop or while running. It takes a lot of getting used to because, if you're not at full run or full stop, it's easy to just walk right off the edge and fall. And, like too many other games, you can only save your game at predetermined locations in the game.
Another fault of this game is its lack of challenge for experienced gamers. It's nice that they're trying to make it accessible to the entire cross section of PlayStation-owning Harry Potter fans, but without varying levels of difficulty, it's less of a game than a tour through Potter's magical world. Still, it is an interesting world, and even through it's easy, the action is still varied enough to be fun. --Porter B Hall

The third instalment of the series that redefined the survival horror video-game genre, Resident Evil 3: Nemesis is the best Resident Evil yet. As Jill Valentine, one of the original game's survivors, players must fight for their lives while fleeing a city overrun by hordes of zombies and other hideous creatures mutated by a sinister corporation's biotechnological virus. To make thing worse, a near-invincible monstrosity known as the Nemesis stalks Jill throughout the game, which raises the series' suspense level to an all-new high.
In addition to the constant threat of the Nemesis, Resident Evil 3 features other gameplay elements new to the series: players can now dodge attacks, perform quick 180-degree turns, and create ammunition by mixing gunpowder types. Also, the "Live Selection" feature forces players to make decisions that affect the story's direction. While none of these additions are particularly groundbreaking, Resident Evil 3 keeps the player in suspense and the action even more intense than in its predecessors, proving that more of same can be a good--make that very, very good--thing in a sequel. --Joe Hon
