After going hand-to-hand combat in X-Men Mutant Academy,X-Men Mutant Wars sees you out on the streets in an attempt to stop the evil Magneto.Using Gambit, Iceman, Cyclops, Storm or Wolverine, you have to battle your way through nine levels of bad guys and an end-of-level bosses before the latest scheme to rule the world is defeated.
If this all sounds too much then perhaps the option of a fight mode might seem more appealing, with the ability to get stuck-in with the end-of-level bosses straightaway, although be warned, this can be quite difficult.
As you would expect, each character has their own special moves and once one is dead you have to option to carry on as another. If you are a fan of the film and comic strips then this is one way to bring that all to life, while being on the move at the same time. --Stuart Miles

Loosely based on the movie, X men Mutant Academy takes the famous X-Men and throws them into your standard beat-em-up. Giving you the chance to prove that Cyclops is better than Wolverine.Set across a number of different modes, Story, Vs (a link cable required) Battle Mode, survival mode and even a training mode, your task is to take a chosen character through a number of fights to become the best X-Men of them all.
The actual gameplay is just how you would expect a beat-em-up to be on a gameboy, with flashbacks of what beat-em-ups used to be like on the MegaDrive and SNES coming swimming back. That said, there are some nice features, including the training room to allow you to practice your moves and learn to deal with the rage bar--built through fighting, it allows you to access special powers.
If you need to exert some pent-up aggression on those long journeys, then this might just be the one to help you. --Stuart Miles

Unless the mention of names like "Stone Cold Steve Austin" and "The Rock" makes your eyes light up and your pulse rise, it's unlikely that WWF Wrestlemania 2000 will appeal to you. This officially licensed title features 15 World Wrestling Federation superstars and five modes of play, including WWF staples like the team-based survivor series and the tournament-style gauntlet mode. Wrestlers can grapple in and out of the wrestling ring, as well as within the confines of the infamous chain-linked cage. Emcee Vince McMahon is around for added authenticity, although his and the wrestlers' trash-talk has been sanitised.Making effective use of the Game Boy Color's graphics and sounds, THQ has done an admirable job of capturing the sensationalistic feel of the WWF, right down to the wrestlers' grandiose stage entrances. Unfortunately, WWF Wrestlemania 2000 is marred by poor gameplay--the controls aren't very responsive, and mindless button-mashing gets you farther than it should. --Joe Hon
Pros:
- Sure to please WWF fans
- Poor controls hamper gameplay

For players looking for a bite-sized version of the best fighting-game series, there is none better than Street Fighter Alpha for Game Boy Color. This miniaturised, full-coloor game brings eight characters to the arena, with famous Street Fighter characters Ken, Ryu, and Chun Li joining the fold. The graphics are coloorful and more detailed than you would expect from a Game Boy game; the characters in their signature costumes are especially well drawn and animated. Varied fighting environments also reflect the geographic locations of the battle, including Hong Kong and Tibet.
Street Fighter Alpha's gameplay, which is surprisingly solid considering the Game Boy only has two buttons, is fairly fluid. (The original game required six buttons for basic control and special moves.) Speaking of special moves, Street Fighter Alpha has plenty. With the right button and control combination, you'll master Ryu's dragon punch and other dangerous stunts. There are even supercombos you can discover--if you are up for the challenge. --Robb Guido
Pros:
- Great miniaturisation, from graphics to control, of the famous arcade fighter game
- Moves are more limited than in bigger version
