The PSone's most popular football management simulator gets its annual update, and LMA Manager 2002 easily retains its crown thanks to an all-round polish and an attractive retail price. Once again you take control of either an English or a Scottish team, and it's your job to manage them through the trials and tribulations of professional football--with the chance to start at any level of the football league or take on one of the various challenges, which include a relegation dogfight or a promotion challenge.Fortunately, given the challenge facing you, the game is easy to get to grips with thanks in part to the easy-to-navigate menu system. You can hire and fire staff, trade on a realistic transfer market and chop and change your tactics with consummate ease. The best bits though are the matches themselves, which play out in front of your eyes. Those fed up with the text-based approach to match action will appreciate the graphical representations LMA Manager 2002 serves up, as it makes it far easier to spot your tactical flaws (which you can attempt to correct as the match goes on if you like).
Okay, the in-game graphics are little to shout about, and arguably this isn't a huge improvement over last year's effort. But nonetheless, if you're a PlayStation armchair footy fan who fancies taking charge of your team, this is currently the best your money can buy. That it's been released at a low retail price makes it even more of a must-have. --Simon Brew

Managing a football team has rarely worked well on a console. Yet with Codemasters' LMA Manager 2001, PlayStation owners not only have an addictive and involving strategy game, but have also had it proved to them beyond all reasonable doubt that tough sporting strategy games can work away from a PC.The game puts you in charge of the team of your choice (with each side having different expectation levels set by their respective boards), leaving you to wheel and deal, use your tactical skills and hope for a little luck as you guide your team from season to season. You can switch jobs, of course (sometimes not by choice), and there are plenty of trophies up for grabs, but make no mistake--LMA Manager 2001 isn't an easy game to win by any means.
It is fun to play though, helped enormously by an interactive match day screen which allows you to watch the game play out in front of you. This leaves you free to tinker with tactics and substitutions, and offers clear guidance as to what you're doing right and wrong. You can speed it up or simply get your results, but this added interactivity is clearly one of the key assets of the game.
LMA Manager 2001 succeeds simply because it sucks you in. Sure, it takes time to play, and at times you'll tear your hair out. But when you finally add the FA Cup to your trophy cabinet, you'll find it was all worth it. --Simon Brew

Become embroiled in one of life's most demanding jobs in Alex Ferguson Player Manager 2001.Alex Ferguson Player Manager 2001 contains all the latest information from the Premier Division, the Nationwide divisions, as well as the Scottish and Champions League. All aspects of football management are covered here, from buying and selling players to the less public duties of dealing with the club's accounts and setting the training schedule.
As from any statistically driven sports game, the emphasis is placed on thought and tactics rather than engaging in actual matches. The graphics are good and the menu system comprehensive, yet, frustration might set in as a result of the level of detail available. However, with perseverance, Alex Ferguson Player Manager 2001 is the one of the better football management game available on the PlayStation. --Alex Leung.
