Let's not beat about the bush: ISS Pro Evolution 2 is one of the best football games on any format--if not the best. Now let's tell you why. Quite simply, ISS understands the need to prioritise gameplay, and, with the other trimmings the game possesses, this is one of the most addictive and playable games on the PSone. Full-stop. Choosing to empower the player rather than restrict him (or her), in ISS there is no set way to go about winning your matches--indeed, chances are you'll need to rethink your tactics constantly depending on who you're playing. Furthermore, unlike many of its rivals, there are no set ways to score your goals in ISS. Okay, every now and then you may get lucky, but make no mistake, most goals you score are down to good build-up and good opportunism.Sure, the game has its faults--the poor commentary and sloppy spelling of player names let the side down. But with a challenging Master League option and various tournaments to play through, as well as a fantastic multi-player mode (which even lets two players be on the same side), ISS Pro Evolution 2 is a must-have, no questions asked. --Simon Brew

The PSone's most popular football management simulator gets its annual update, and LMA Manager 2002 easily retains its crown thanks to an all-round polish and an attractive retail price. Once again you take control of either an English or a Scottish team, and it's your job to manage them through the trials and tribulations of professional football--with the chance to start at any level of the football league or take on one of the various challenges, which include a relegation dogfight or a promotion challenge.Fortunately, given the challenge facing you, the game is easy to get to grips with thanks in part to the easy-to-navigate menu system. You can hire and fire staff, trade on a realistic transfer market and chop and change your tactics with consummate ease. The best bits though are the matches themselves, which play out in front of your eyes. Those fed up with the text-based approach to match action will appreciate the graphical representations LMA Manager 2002 serves up, as it makes it far easier to spot your tactical flaws (which you can attempt to correct as the match goes on if you like).
Okay, the in-game graphics are little to shout about, and arguably this isn't a huge improvement over last year's effort. But nonetheless, if you're a PlayStation armchair footy fan who fancies taking charge of your team, this is currently the best your money can buy. That it's been released at a low retail price makes it even more of a must-have. --Simon Brew

Marrying EA Sports' trademark razzmatazz to the hype and glitter of the biggest sporting event on Earth, the PSone's 2002 FIFA World Cup is predictably a multimedia feast, with a passable game tacked on too. As with FIFA 2002 it's clear that the bulk of the development money has gone in the direction of the PC and next-generation consoles; that's not to say that the PSone version has been totally neglected, as the intro sequences and all-singing-and-dancing menu system testify. It's just that when you cut to the match action, things don't flow together as well, with jerky scrolling and under-impressive visuals. This does leave the player more able to concentrate on the game itself though, and the match engine is packed with neat little moves and touches that, with practice, will help send your selected team to World Cup glory. Replete with the full player rosters, official kits and the full tournament to play your way through, the game centres round the tournament at the expense of other league-based options--but then you can't argue that it doesn't give you what it says on the box.
2002 FIFA World Cup, despite its flaws, could be just the title for the undemanding, younger player who's not particularly experienced with games in this genre. For while the game does little to threaten the position of the PSone's current footie champion, ISS Pro Evolution 2, it's simple to get into and provides a decent enough challenge. --Simon Brew
