A long-time front runner in graphics and playability, EA Sports has tweaked NBA Live 2000's simulation mode and artificial intelligence to create a solid, all-around roundball experience. The biggest new addition to this year's version, however, is undoubtedly the presence of Michael Jordan. Absent from NBA Live predecessors, the greatest player in NBA history makes an appearance in NBA Live 2000's "One-on-One" mode where the player challenges the legends of the NBA on an outdoor court.
The new Franchise Mode adds welcome simulation depth to NBA Live 2000's quick arcade gameplay. Players assume control of a NBA team and guide it through 25 seasons; juggling rosters, scouting the draft and number-crunching the salary cap are all requirements of the aspiring NBA general manager. Like previous versions, all NBA teams are included and rosters are updated for the 99/00 season. Furthermore, users can create their own players for the game and even scan in their own likeness with the "Face in the Game" feature.
Once again, EA Sports succeeds in creating a visually stunning basketball game with exciting, intuitive gameplay. NBA Live 2000's numerous features (including three-point shoot-outs and Internet multiplayer) and improved realism guarantee hours of hoop enjoyment. --Doug Radcliffe

EA Sports promises that "the soul of hoops comes to life" with NBA Live 99. Hype aside, the company has delivered a solid basketball game that will keep you coming back for one last shot. With excellent graphics and new features such as play-by-play commentary and real-life player reactions, this virtual NBA exhibition will score big with basketball fans.NBA Live 99 may be a bit frustrating to play until you're familiar with the controls, but once you've mastered the basics, you can do quite a bit. Our favourite moves include the crossover, spin, fake and, of course, the slam-dunk. Luxuriate over close-ups of your greatest shots with the "instant replay" feature. To add to the competition, you can play complete 48-minute games with as many as eight players. A memory card will come in handy to arrange full seasons and playoffs. The variety of camera angles adds to the feel of a real NBA game, and its exhilarating pace and competitive options will get almost anyone hooked on this game. --Sal Barcia

NBA Hoopz is strictly for the basketball fan that thinks the sport is all about spectacular dunks, lots of shoving, and little or no strategy. With the goofy gameplay and exaggerated NBA player renderings, b-ball purists probably will (and should) dismiss this as the dumbest of arcade games for the PlayStation.Hoopz is basically the latest generation of basketball games in the ultra arcadey NBA Showtime or NBA Jam vein and has little in common with the more accurate simulations of the Live and Shootout series. In most respects it plays slightly better than the older arcade-style titles, if only because Hoopz is a three-on-three game.
Most gamers will immediately notice the enlarged heads and huge biceps on even the lankiest of NBA players. Also, the fast-paced action basically canters on hurling the ball around the court as quickly as possible without any regard for complicated play calling. In fact, most ballers can easily jump 25 feet above the rim for ridiculous, death-defying dunks that, of course, deliver the ultimate in sports fantasy.
Unlike most of the 2001 season of "real" basketball games for the PlayStation, Hoopz stretches gameplay with a few mini games. Included are variants on 21, Around-the-World, 3-Point Contest, and even the old school 2 Ball that features two-on-two team play. There are unlockable courts for you to find and you can also create your own players and cause havoc throughout the NBA with wild league trades and customisations.
While the courts and backgrounds are decently drawn, the player models are disappointingly blocky even though its on the PlayStation. Hoopz gives players a backward walk and the give-and-go, among other moves, but the game's emphasis on shoving, steals, and strategy-defying action confounds these nuances. --Mark Brooks

NBA Basketball 2000 has so many holes that it's hard to imagine any self-respecting gamer sticking with it for very long. The game lets you play exhibition games, shoot around in an outdoor practice court, or take on a full season (which can run 12, 28, 56 or a full 82 games). Graphically, NBA Basketball 2000 looks pretty good but lacks much of the polish and flash of EA's NBA Live 2000. Also, although many of the NBA stars in this game have been made to look like their real-world counterparts, most players on the court look plain and blocky.
Controlling your players is simple enough, but the artificial intelligence is so weak that you can often march a player right down the court and to the hoop without any difficulty at all. Of course, you can miss easy, open shots, while the computer routinely nails 70 to 80 percent of its jumpers, even from three-point range. The result is deceptively simple basketball action that often frustrates players with unfair game results.
Other weaknesses: spoken play-by-play and colour commentary are usually weaknesses in sports games, but in this one these features are particularly lousy. Also, NBA Basketball 2000 offers a paltry array of game modes and in-game features. There is no draft option, for example, and players have only four offensive plays to choose from during a game.
Overall, NBA Basketball 2000 is suitable only for bargain-bin shoppers. Serious basketball fans will take no pleasure from this game. --Michael E. Ryan
