Video golf doesn't get any more casual (without being completely ludicrous) than Everybody's Golf 2, an amusing mix of arcade-style gameplay and mostly realistic golf physics. Featuring six modes of play and seven courses, this offbeat sports title offers good single and multiplayer action for those who find the officially licensed golf titles a little too stiff. The golfers in Everybody's Golf 2are a motley line-up of cartoon characters with varying abilities. In addition to unlocking playable characters in the single-player versus mode, golfers can win balls, clubs and other prizes in tournament mode. These equipment upgrades help boost your skill level during subsequent golf rounds.
The 3-D graphics in Everybody's Golf 2are somewhat inconsistent. This game is littered with two-dimensional eyesores (such as the peanut gallery of onlookers) and sloppy animation (such as when golfers chase down balls). Equally spotty are the controls. The teeny-tiny swing meter makes your shot power hard to judge, and pulling off accurate or non-straightforward shots with the game's control set-up is much more difficult than it needs to be. --Joe Hon

EA Sports paid golf mega-star Tiger Woods a bundle to star in its golf games and the money was probably worth it. The last two games weren't very good and probably needed the mega-star's endorsement to sell as well as they did. Stung by criticism, EA lured away a few of the developers of rival Sierra's golf simulation, PGA Tour. And they seem to have done the trick, but although the experienced developers have improved this instalment of the Tiger series, a few flaws still remain. The biggest update over Tiger Woods 2000 is the speed of the graphics. Last year's version was terminally slow and choppy, especially when using the "chase camera". This year things are smoothed out. The scenery graphics still look great, but the golfers look tired and pasted on. Except for Woods, he must have had it in his contract that his animation would look perfect. As it stands his is the only swing, celebration and frustration animation that are in synch with the action.
Tiger Woods 2001 still features the best three-click swing method on the block. It even gives you easy-to-follow hints while you are learning the game. These tutorials just aren't available in other golf games. Tiger's "mouse swing" is awful however, easily the worst around. The mouse doesn't track as intuitively or as well as it does in Microsoft's or Sierra's golf games.
Tiger Woods 2001 contains a few great courses and the gameplay is solid. It is recommendable to golf fans looking for a "lighter" game, even if at the expense of a decent mouse swing method and a certain amount of realism. It is also the only game in town featuring the inestimable Mr Woods. --Bob Andrews
