With over 20 classic rally cars and close to 50 different tracks, Microsoft's Rallisport Challenge provides a lasting trial for rally enthusiasts. The stunning graphics are the first thing to strike you about the game. Photorealistic textures, solar reflections, detailed vehicles and sumptuous terrain, landscapes and horizons provide a real visual feast for your eyes. The game itself has a strong arcade feel to it.There are several modes of play, with the predominant role belonging to Career mode. This consists of a series of mini tournaments where you acquire points for position, time, top speed and damage. Reaching points thresholds unlocks more tournaments and more cars. These tournaments usually consist of several timed stages, or in the case of rally cross, a series of races against three computer-controlled opponents.
They span different terrains and climates, so one minute you'll be trying to minimise skids around the ice-rink circuits, the next you'll be power sliding round gravel hairpins on a hill climb. Each of the tracks can be practiced on in a single-race mode and there is also multiplayer support. The car setup available is limited. You can adjust brake balance, gear ratios, tyres, steering and suspension, but only in the most basic sense--such as front, medium, back; or long, medium, short. The cars also handle very forgivingly and damage isn't accrued from one stage to the next, so there's no managing of repairs.
Rallisport Challenge looks gorgeous, is heaps of fun to play and has good longevity. If you are looking for a rally car simulation then this will leave you disappointed, but if you are after some high octane racing and fancy thrashing around in an Audi or Subaru, then pick up a copy now. --Jason Weston

There are rally games and there are rally games--and then there's Colin McRae Rally 3. It's difficult to know where to start with the third instalment of this hugely successful franchise: the eye-wateringly sharp graphics; the intuitive gameplay or the understated, superb commentary and sound. As you'd expect from a top rally sim, everything about the vehicles can be customised, and tinkering under the hood between stages really produces a difference. If you're a bad driver you can also see the difference, as tearing the hood, side panels, or windows out mid-stage reveals an astonishing level of detail within the car. Engine parts move, suspension arms judder, and Mr McRae himself bounces around the car's cockpit in full 3-D.
With a variety of gameplay modes ranging from single races to three-season tours of duty as McRae himself, there's plenty of bang for your buck here--and by the time you've cannoned off the scenery for the umpteenth time you'll know what bangs are all about. Thankfully code masters have resisted the temptation to fill Colin McRae Rally 3 with discordant music tracks, relegating the score to intro and menu screens and leaving the in-game sound to codriver commentary and a multitude of engine sounds--a pleasant change in an age where licensed soundtracks are king. The strongest element of this game, though, is the gameplay. The car handling is dead-on and in wild weather (snow, rain and fog) guiding a speeding Ford Focus around sharp bends is a real art form. --Chris Russell

Sega Rally 2 is the sequel to an arcade game that made its home debut on the ill-fated Sega Saturn video game console. Despite the Saturn's demise, the original Sega Rally still holds a warm place in the heart of video game fanatics as one of the best arcade-style racing games ever created. Now the series follow-up hits the console system after a successful run in arcades. And with cars and tracks not found in the stand-up version, Sega Rally 2 fans should be very pleased with Sega's efforts to enhance the gameplay fun for the Dreamcast version. On the flip side, casual racing fans may find the difficulty level a bit too advanced for their tastes.Sega Rally 2 favours more of an arcade-style fantasy physics model than its predecessor, but don't expect this game to be a Sunday drive. Those looking for an exciting romp behind the wheel will likely be disappointed after numerous sideline crashes and races end prematurely due to expired time. Purists and road jockeys weaned on the likes of Gran Turismo may be able to handle the challenge factor here, but casual arcade-style racing fans may find the race too hot to handle for long-term, frustration-free fun. --Jeff Young
