In a nutshell:
The world's scariest first person shooter makes a return with an expansion packed filled with more ghostly apparitions and gun fetishism than you could ever want. The lowdown:
Despite having some of the best graphics and artificial intelligence of any recent first person shooter, as well as the creepiest atmosphere, the original F.E.A.R. didn't do nearly as well as it deserved. This expansion offers a second chance to see what you were missing with a story that picks up immediately from the end of the original game as you try to escape the destruction of the Origin Facility. The expansion doesn't really add much that is new beyond a few new weapons (including some super useful sentry guns) and enemies (such as a giant walking tank) and it is rather short but it's still got the best gunfights in the business. Most exciting moment:
Despite the Japanese horror influenced atmosphere, the best thing about F.E.A.R. is just how intelligent your enemies are. They'll constantly try to outflank and outmanoeuvre you and many times you'll only be saved by the use of your essential bullet time ability. In the end it's your intelligent opponents you fear the most, not the virtual ghosts.Since you ask:
The reason that there are no new multiplayer options in the game is that a free update has already been released called F.E.A.R. Combat. In an unusually generous move you can download it for nothing from the F.E.A.R. website at www.joinfear.com.The bottom line:
More of the same of one of the most underrated shooters of last year.-HARRISON DENT -

In a nutshell:
Although it was announced more than a decade ago this demonstrates that the best things really do come to those that wait, with the most original and technically advanced first person shoot `em-up in years. The lowdown:
Although it was conceived at a time when 3D graphics cards were still optional the basic idea behind the Prey portal technology is still the same as it ever was, allowing you to instantly step from one world to another in the game. You can even create the portals yourself as you battle grotesque enemy bosses in one area and jump back to another to recover. The game casts you as a Cherokee Indian with a number of magical powers such as spirit walking that let you explore the game world as a spirit, and deathwalk which replaces the normal need for intrusive quick saves with an innovative mini-game set between the worlds of the living and the dead. Most exciting moment:
Not only is the portal technology amazing but the game's use of gravity is equally inspired with gravity escalators that run up and across ceilings and some excellent zero gravity sections where you pilot spaceship pods and explore a tiny rotating planetoid.Since you ask:
Originally intended only for the PC, the Xbox 360 version is being developed by British team Venom Games, who previously created Rocky Legends for Ubisoft, and features an 8 player multiplayer mode. The bottom line:
Looks like being one of the top predators in the shoot `em-up world.

Gamers looking for intellectual horror will find it in Silent Hill 2. As the story opens, James Sunderland receives a letter from his wife telling him to meet her in the town of Silent Hill. The only problem is that she's been dead for three years. In the hope of being reunited with her, he explores the haunted town, and has many terrifying and unexpected encounters. While the brilliantly designed monsters are indeed scary, it's the complex twists and turns of the plot that really produce the game's terror. Gameplay is largely puzzle-based: much of it involves gathering clues and items to solve each puzzle. There are a few fights thrown in, but these are quite easy and mostly used to show off the developers' bizarre creations. The level of both puzzles and fighting can be adjusted to match the player's skill level. Although its mechanics are rudimentary, the game's presentation is anything but. A heavy use of fog is the game's hallmark effect, greatly adding to the mood. Sound--both effects and music--alternates between eerie silence and sudden, shocking crescendos.
Although the graphics and sound are both top-notch, the real star of this game is the story. It's very rich and intricate--a sharp contrast to the banal scenarios that frame most games. The game is short (around 10 hours), but you'll want to give it another go to discover its multiple endings and secret items. Despite basic gameplay, Silent Hill 2 is an excellent choice for gamers looking for cerebral thrills. Parents should note that in addition to violence and gore, this game deals with topics like suicide, murder and euthanasia. --Raymond M Padilla
